THE SOUND OF TAP behandelt im Kern die ersten 40 Jahre von internationalen Aufnahmen mit Stepptanz (1926-1965). Daneben wird ein Ausflug in die Anfänge gemacht und mithilfe zweier Bonus-CDs die Brücke in die Gegenwart geschlagen. Der Stepptanz entwickelte sich zusammen mit der Jazzmusik von Swing zu Bebop und Bigband, berührt aber auch Genres wie Blues, Kabarett, Musical und sogar klassische Musik. Zudem lässt sich in dieser Zeit der Wechsel der Aufnahmetechnik von Zylinder- und 78er-Platten zu Singles (7″) und LPs in Stereo nachvollziehen. Einige der CDs mit Aufnahmen von Lehrwerken widmen sich dem pädagogischen Aspekt des Stepptanzes und den damit verbundenen Themen: Rhythmusdarstellung, Notation und Terminologie. Hier stellt Uwe Meusel sein System der Stepptanznotation vor, das eine Reihe von Problemen bisheriger Notationssysteme löst. Dieser Teil wird durch zusätzliche 391 Seiten (PDF auf DVD) unterstützt. Mehr als die Hälfte der 375 Aufnahmen werden erstmals auf CD veröffentlicht, während das ca. 400 Seiten umfassende Buch in englischer Sprache neben den Liner Notes auch 77 detaillierte Biographien der ausführenden Künstler mit Bildern enthält.
